Let’s start with ORIGINAL MEDICARE. This is comprised of Parts A and B. Medicare A and B are administered directly by the federal government.

Medicare PART A (Hospital Insurance): This covers most medically necessary hospital skilled nursing facilities, home health and hospice care. There is no premium if you have worked and paid Social Security taxes for at least 40 calendar quarters. If not, you will pay a monthly premium.

Medicare PART B (Medical Insurance): This covers most medically necessary doctors' services, preventive care, durable medical equipment, hospital outpatient services, laboratory tests, x-rays, mental health care, and some home health and ambulance services. There is a monthly premium for Medicare PART B. The premium could be higher based on your income.

Now let's take a look at MEDICARE PART D (Prescription Drug Insurance). This is prescription drug coverage when you’re not in the hospital.

  • Medicare PART D is only provided through private insurance companies that have contracts with the government (unlike Parts A and B, it is NOT provided directly by the government).
  • Medicare PART D is optional for most people. Whether you should take it depends on your current drug medications and needs. (If you decide to not take it when you are eligible, there may be a penalty when you do enroll).
  • You can get Medicare PART D coverage either through your Medicare health benefits (Medicare Advantage Plan) or with Original Medicare as a Stand-Alone Plan.

Now let's dive into Medicare PART C. Don't worry, we know our alphabet! Medicare PART C is different then parts A, B, and D. Here is what you need to know about Medicare PART C (Medicare Advantage Plans).

Medicare Part C is the part of Medicare policy that allows private health insurance companies to provide Medicare benefits. It combines Medicare Parts A and B and usually Part D. These are Medicare private health plans, such as HMOs and PPOs. If you want, you can choose to get your Medicare coverage through a Medicare private health plan instead of Original Medicare.

These plans must offer at least the same benefits as Original Medicare (Parts A and B) but can do so with different rules, costs and coverage restrictions. You can also get Part D as part of the benefits package if you choose.

There are many different types of Medicare private health plans available. .You may pay a monthly premium for this coverage, in addition to your Part B premium.

It is important to search for the Medicare Insurance plan that fits your financial and health situation!
